Here is an example of how to pair your smartphone with a GPS receiver.  Not all smartphones are exatly the same, so you may have a few differences, but most all smartphones have similar instructions for how to pair with a Bluetooth GPS receiver.  The following example uses a Cingular BlackJack.

1. Press the red hangup button to clear the screen to the desktop.

2. Scroll down using the 'More' menu option, or the down cursor to get to the Settings folder.

3.  Click the center 'OK' button to open the Settings folder.

4. Select the 'Connections' option and click the 'OK' center button.

5.  Select the 'Bluetooth' option and click the 'OK' center button.

6.  Select the next 'Bluetooth' option, and click the center 'OK' button.

7.  Check the 'Turn on Bluetooth' check box.

8.  Select 'Devices' from the menu, and click the 'OK' center button.

9.  If you have not paired any devices with your smartphone, you should see the following screen.  Otherwise, you will see the devices that you have already paired, such as a Bluetooth headset.  If you already have an external GPS paired,  you can skip ahead to Step number 17.   Otherwise,  Click on 'Add new device...'.

10.  You will see a message 'Searching for Bluetooth Devices...' as in the following screen shot.

11.  When it is done searching, it should show your Bluetooth GPS receiver.  If it doesn't, make sure it is turned on, and is within 5 feet of the smartphone.  You can click on 'Add new device...' again to find your GPS receiver.

12.  You will be prompted to enter the passcode for your GPS receiver.

13. For the Holux 236 Slim, the code is 0000 (four zeros).  If your GPS is different, then consult the manual that came with your device.

14. You should get the wait icon while the GPS is pairing.

15. Then, you should get a message indicating that your GPS has connected with your GPS receiver.

16.  Click the center 'OK' button, and then click the 'Next ' menu option.

17.  Make sure you check the 'Serial Port' check box.

18.  Click on the 'Back' button, located above the red hangup button, until you get to the screen shown beneath Step 19.

19.  Click on the 'Menu' option.

20.  Select the 'Com Ports' option from the menu, and click the center 'OK' button.

21.  Click on the 'Menu' option again.

22. Select 'New Outgoing Port', and click the center 'OK' button.

23.  Choose your GPS receiver, and then click on the 'Select' menu option.

24.  Uncheck the 'Secure Connection' check box, and choose a com port from the list.  For the BlackJack we recommend Com6.  It doesn't really matter which port you choose, so long as you write it down.  You will need to know this com port number in order to get the MyFreeTracking.com software settings correct on your smartphone.

25.  If there is a problem with the com port you choose, then keep trying different ones until you find one that works.  Please write the number of the port down.  You must know this com port number in order for the MyFreeTracking.com Track application to have the proper settings.  Failing to do so will result in the smartphone tracking software not working, which will keep you coming back to the help screens.

26.  After you have successfully selected an outgoing port for your GPS, you should see a screen like to one below.

27.  Now, click on the 'Done' menu option until you get all the way back to the screen with the title 'Start'

28 .   Finally, press the red hangup button to clear the screen to the desktop.  You have successfully paired your GPS receiver with your smartphone.

Have you downloaded and setup the Track software on your smartphone handset yet?
